Pokemon BW2 Trailers’ Vision of the Pokemon World

astrognosy:

sephiuswispell:

Ever since I first saw the animated trailers for Pokemon Black and White 2, I’ve been thinking about Pokemon Cries differently than before.

Now, I can’t really say I know exactly who produced those trailers per se, but it was undoubtly someone entirely different from those who make the anime. This leads me to believe they have an entirely different vision regarding the Pokemon World interpreted in the games.

Despite being mostly focused on action, you can see far more realism coming from it than anything you’d see in the anime. You can see how Team Plasma orders their POkemon to attack at Kyouhei, rather than at his Pokemon. You can see how Emboar is upset at Elesa’s confident attitude, and furthermore what battles really are about were they to be in real life.

One particular trait that I noticed, and that I really liked, was the way Pokemon sound in it.
They weren’t crying out their names, but rather, making noises somewhat more accurate for their species.

Any game on which Pokemon have their names as their cries has been inspired by the anime and done by different teams from the main game sssentially, while if you interact with most Pokemon in main series games, you will notice they have more realistic sounds, rather than what the anime protrays them as.

Of course, a few of them mantain that trait even in the games, if only because the anime inspired it (Pikachu being the most prominent example), but the vast majority hold a clear difference.

This leads me to believe that these trailers are how the game developers envision Pokemon, and you can see how much of a contrast this poses to the anime and various mangas released thus far.

Where I am going with this is that, yet again, the anime seems to delude the clear image most hold on how the world of Pokemon is like.

Everything they represent on it seems far more accurate. Hell, even Samurott would actually have that height, as unlikely as it may seem without having their Pokedex data at hand.

In the scene where Mei battles Cheren, you can find something else that gives more of an honour to the Pokemon League and Gym leaders themselves.

Now, the anime and usual game formula’s convinced you that Pokemon Trainers are there solely to collect gym badges and try at the challenging Pokemon League, right?

However, if we take a look at the actual definition of a Gym Leader proposed back in the initial days of Red and Blue, you will see that they are meant to be very strong trainers, and that only very few, as seen clearly, get the privilege of becoming one.

Now, you can clearly see that the “first” gym leaders of every region have arguably weak Pokemon, that anyone with a decent team could take out.

First of all, there is no such thing as a “first” gym on any region. What I mean by this, is that not every single trainer in Kanto was born in Pallet town, and most had to catch tehir first Pokemon, rather than get one as a gift from a professor. Of coruse, none is to say a mentor or parent couldn’t have helped them with it.

Next, it’s all about the Pokemon the Gym leaders have. Both the species and their levela re there only so it is not impossible to defeat them, but now we must make heed of what Pokemon levels represent.

If they existed in real life, Pokemon wouldn’t have anything akin to a level, and they would train themselves in degrees of power that are unmeasurable. Similairly to how a human can call out on their physical strenght, and earns zeal by taking part in competitions and the sort, yet doesn’t have a number over their heads telling them how strong they are.

The species the gym leaders have at first in the games is unrealistic, especially if we consider they are supposed to be very talented trainers. From this, the trailer gains far more logic, as Mei would’ve had to train ardously to get her Snivy to become a Serperior, and then have the nerve to challenge Cheren at his Gym, on which he clearly has a Stoutland from the get-go.

What does this mean?
It means that if Pokemon were real, the formula of a “Pokemon Journey” mwould be altered entirely.

Instead of travelling from town to town challenging and earning badges, a realistic trainer would train devotedly after reaching a town with a Gym, and then, once they think they are prepared, actually challenge the Gym leader.

The value of a single Pokemon badge would peak incredibly, and people would feel proud to own even one.

The travelling part would also lose importance when you know where you’re headed and what you can expect. Considering this takes place in the current world, many trainers could just take a vehicle over to the next city once they’re prepared, just to battle the gym leader.

Of course, this doesn’t mean they wouldn’t go out to the nature every now and then, but that is mostly a job for biologists and researchers rather than those who only want to battle competively, and if you think logically about it, you’d think it would be made illegal to harm innocent wild Pokemon without an actual purpose.

Now that we consider this…
…The Elite Four also gains a new meaning, no?

And the Champion is someone who really makes for their title in every way possible.

Meditating over this, I believe it’s safe to say that even the games pose a rather simplified vision of how the Pokemon World would actually be, however, the developers have redeemed a fragment of their craving for reality by making those trailers, and have shown somewhat of a glimpse towards what a world where trainers exist would be like.

Perhaps even if it is not what was intended in the trailers, this is what at least i take for a more plausible possibility.

Needless to even say, this is all my opinion, and you’re more than encouraged to decline and argue with me regarding it; I’d appreciate criticism.

Nevertheless, thank you for taking your time to read this!

P.S. If you can, disregard the typos.

Ahhhh yes I really like this!

For Gym Leaders, though, I’ve always been of the opinion that they have multiple teams, staggered in strength to accommodate (somewhat) to the challenger.  So let’s say Kyouhei (badge count: 0/8) challenges Cheren.  At the Gym entrance, he’d probably have to show his ID, which would be rung up by the guide to prove that he hasn’t gotten any badges yet.  This is wired to Cheren, and Cheren uses his Patrat+Lilipup team.  But let’s say Mei (badge count: 7/8) challenges Cheren in a scenario similar to her scene in the trailer.  The same process would happen, but since she’s going for her final badge, Cheren would have a much stronger team.

I think they outright say it in BW somewhere, but I think the point of a Gym Leader is more than just having absurdly strong Pokemon and the wits to use them right—it’s about testing challengers, pushing them and seeing if they’ll be able to prove themselves or not.  That’s why Cheren becoming a GL is such a beautiful conclusion to his character arc, imo—he was so obsessed with strength in the beginning, but now here he is applying that strength in a much more subtle way in order to help others grow, rather than to beat everyone.

But yeah, I definitely think the trailers are a much better, much more interesting, and much more realistic presentation of how the Pokemon world would play out in a setting not constricted in some ways by the mechanics of a video game.

On a somewhat serious note today because of a conversation the other day:

I am sure every girl can recall, at least once as a child, coming home and telling their parents, uncle, aunt or grandparent about a boy who had pulled her hair, hit her, teased her, pushed her or committed some other playground crime. I will bet money that most of those, if not all, will tell you that they were told “Oh, that just means he likes you”. I never really thought much about it before having a daughter of my own. I find it appalling that this line of bullshit is still being fed to young children. Look, if you want to tell your child that being verbally and/or physically abused is an acceptable sign of affection, i urge you to rethink your parenting strategy. If you try and feed MY daughter that crap, you better bring protective gear because I am going to shower you with the brand of “affection” you are endorsing.

When the fuck was it decided that we should start teaching our daughters to accept being belittled, disrespected and abused as endearing treatment? And we have the audacity to wonder why women stay in abusive relationships? How did society become so oblivious to the fact that we were conditioning our daughters to endure abusive treatment, much less view it as romantic overtures? Is this where the phrase “hitting on girls” comes from? Well, here is a tip: Save the “it’s so cute when he gets hateful/physical with her because it means he loves her” asshattery for your own kids, not mine. While you’re at it, keep them away from my kids until you decide to teach them respect and boundaries.

My daughter is `10 years old and has come home on more than one occasion recounting an incident at school in which she was teased or harassed by a male classmate. There has been several times when someone that she was retelling the story to responded with the old, “that just means he likes you” line. Wrong. I want my daughter to know that being disrespected is NEVER acceptable. I want my daughter to know that if someone likes her and respects her, much less LOVES her, they don’t hurt her and they don’t put her down. I want my daughter to know that the boy called her ugly or pushed her or pulled her hair didn’t do it because he admires her, it is because he is a little asshole and assholes are an occurrence of society that will have to be dealt with for the rest of her life. I want my daughter to know how to deal with assholes she will encounter throughout her life. For now, I want my daughter to know that if someone is verbally harassing her, she should tell the teacher and if the teacher does nothing, she should tell me. If someone physically touches her, tell the teacher then, if it continues, to yell, “STOP TOUCHING/PUNCHING/PUSHING ME” in the middle of class or the hallway, then tell me. Last year, one little boy stole her silly bandz from her. He just grabbed her and yanked a handful of them off of her wrist. When I went to the school to address the incident, the teacher smiled and explained it away to her, in front of me, “he probably has a crush on you”. Okay, the boy walked up to my daughter, grabbed and held her by the arm and forcibly removed her bracelets from her as she struggled and you want to convince her that she should be flattered? Fuck off. I am going to punch you in the face but I hope you realize it is just my way of thanking you for the great advice you gave my daughter. If these same advice givers’ sons came home crying because another male classmate was pushing them, pulling their hair, hitting them or calling them names, I would bet dollars to donuts they would tell him to defend themselves and kick the kid’s ass, if necessary. They sure as shit wouldn’t say, “he probably just wants a play date”.

I will teach my daughter to accept nothing less than respect. Anyone who hurts her physically or emotionally doesn’t deserve her respect, friendship or love. I will teach my boys the same thing as well as the fact that hitting on girls doesn’t involve hitting girls. I can’t teach my daughter to respect herself if I am teaching her that no one else has to respect her. I can’t raise sons that respect women, if I teach them that bullying is a valid expression of affection.

The next time that someone offers up that little “secret” to my daughter, I am going to slap the person across the face and yell, “I LOVE YOU”.

“My identity is not hurting anyone!” - On otherkin and multiples facilitating real illnesses

integrated-mind:

“My identity is not hurting anyone! Therefore you have no reason to complain about my existence!”

This argument is the most common retaliation to criticism and open trolling of otherkin and multiple systems, and a dangerous belief system to subscribe to.

As I mentioned in my post ‘I’ll Believe You if You Believe Me’, there are absolutely no limitations to who you can be in the multiple (and otherkin) community. If you wish your idea of “identity” to include serial killer, pedophile, ghost, unicorn, Hitler, or a special “psychic connection” to Tom Hiddleston, you can do these and more. You can be whatever you wish because there is no base criteria you must meet.

What little rules there are are easy to navigate and lead you to even more sub-communities. Do you believe you were Tom Hiddleston in a past life? Fiction/Factivekin. Does he live with your in your head? Factive in a plural system. Do you have a “strong connection” with him but he does not live in your head? Soulbonding. So on, etc.

But why is this harmful? Why is it wrong to be so accepting? What does it hurt?

It facilitates real disorders.

There are people out there who are otherkin or multiple that are very well grounded, live in stable home environments, and have no mental illnesses. For example, though I have DID, I do not view it as a “mental illness” because I have worked with my system for almost fifteen years to be as happy and healthy as I am today. At one point my DID was an illness because it crippled my life and functioning. Though it hasn’t gone away, it has changed significantly, enough for me to live very well.

Otherkin and multiples who exercise moderation in their beliefs usually feel pressured into becoming “something more” by the community. For example, someone who resonates with the otherkin belief system because they feel a strong spiritual connection with a certain animal may then be pressured into believing they ARE said animal, even though normally they would never have considered it. Their stable, healthy spiritual belief can easily be twisted into something damaging for themselves and those who love them.

Joining the otherkin or multiple community is a challenge because of the “go big or go home” attitude it facilitates. And that attitude not only accepts delusions of reality, but encourages them.

Because so many otherkin and multiples have been taught to suspend their disbelief and never question their peers, they cannot help people who join them who genuinely need psychiatric intervention.

I’m sure many will reply at one time they encouraged a friend to go to therapy or seek anti-depressants. But this is not enough. Sometimes, members of a community who are hurting themselves and others need to be told to cease their belief system.

Multiples can tell others in their community that they are completely out of line and need to seek help. The same applies to otherkin. But the problem with doing this is two-fold; one, that judging one another in this all-accepting community will earn the label of pariah, and two, that so many multiples and ‘kin depend on others believing in them to believe in themselves.

If these problems aren’t enough, many who are genuinely unstable and using these communities to fit their delusions and disorders often have already been to therapy.

“But I told my therapist about my multiple system/kin identity and they said it was perfectly okay!”

This is the second defensive argument to criticism and unfortunately many will believe means the individual IS of sound mind.

The truth about the therapy process is this: therapists will allow you to believe in “harmless” things, assuming that they are coping mechanisms for a larger problem. Once the larger problem is taken care of, these coping mechanisms will clear up on their own.

Believing you have the spirit of a dragon or that popular video game characters talk to you are not immediately life-threatening coping mechanisms, so they are dealt with later. A (good) therapist will never tell you that your coping mechanism with such a “belief system” is wrong or false unless it is putting you in danger. Even then, it’s unlikely they will outright state it is wrong. Their goal is to work WITH you and teach YOU to come to the conclusion you are not a dragon on your own.

A good therapist knows denying such coping mechanisms as “real” will put their client on the defensive. So when asked if being plural or ‘kin is bad or wrong, they will not answer with their truthful opinion.

When I met my therapist for the first time, she informed me “short-term” therapy is considered to be two to four years. Seeing a therapist for a couple of months (or less!) barely scratches the surface of the process, and any ‘kin or multiples who haven’t been in therapy for this amount of time cannot really know if their therapist truly finds their identities acceptable.

The truth is that identities CAN hurt people. Believing the Columbine killer Eric Harris lives with you hurts the families of the people he killed, it hurts the survivors, it hurts thousands of people affected by the killings. It also is hurting yourself. Being a fan of someone who has killed, raped, or demonized others is called hybristophilia(wiki article).

Multiples and otherkin are constantly trying to rally together, stating that no one should “fight” or judge one another. By doing this, they are willingly blinding themselves to the responsibility of seeing problematic behavior from those around them and the nessecity of taking steps to help others. That is how their identities hurt others and why their beliefs need questioned.

The photo above is the closest humanity has ever come to creating Medusa.

If you were to look at this, you would die instantly. End of story.

The image is of a reactor core lava formation in the basement of the Chernobyl nuclear plant. It’s called the Elephant’s Foot and weighs hundreds of tons, but is only a couple meters across.

Oh, and regarding the Medusa thing? This picture was taken through a mirror around the corner of the hallway. Because the wheeled camera they sent up to take pictures of it was destroyed by the radiation

I wonder if they could get pictures in colour now or maybe get an accurate heat reading off of that thing, if it’s still all there.

It’s crazy to think that something can be that strong that it would kill you by just looking at it. Though it’s understandable. I’d like a heat reading off of it.

Oh my god

I have such a science boner right now

Do you know how fucking dense that must be to weigh hundreds of tons?

Pretty fucking dense.

Wow.

I found this video for anyone who wants to see a video of the thing (although it’s not the best quality). This thing is a serious monster. I have a little trouble deciphering this Wikipedia article, but from what I gather, this thing weighs 1,200 tons (2,400,000 pounds - a number I cannot even begin to fathom) and is only losing about 22 pounds of uranium per year. It resists its environment and if the shelter is improved, that loss is expected to drop.

Holy shit.

I am simply astounded by the sheer power and properties of radiation and nuclear power plants. This is seriously scary stuff. Not to mention its effects on humans. i find deformed humans very, very unnerving. The mutations that radiation cause are the worst, in my opinion, than say, genetic mutations. This video shows some of the mutations from the Chernobyl meltdown (warning: these are very disturbing images, so view at your own risk).

Here’s another website with a collection of Chernobyl pictures, mostly of the building itself (no mutation pictures, so unless you’re upset by major destruction, this is a really cool look-through). This is my favorite picture because it really shows the dripping of the radioactive fuel/debris lava out of the valve. I just find it so absolutely terrifying that something like this could ever happen. Radiation is seriously scary stuff. What I want to know is how they took that picture.

Oh holy shit this is terrifying. The color just makes it worse. It’s like a volcano erupted indoors. Which is probably a pretty accurate analogy, plus tons of radiation to go with it. “”Corium” is only formed during a reactor meltdown as a product of the solid fuel fissioning uncontrollably. This super-hot fuel turns into a liquid and melts its way through steel, concrete, and whatever else that might be in contact with it. So it’s a mixture of fuel and various building materials,” the admin says in the comments.

This article says that Chernobyl will stay radioactive for 100,000 years.

Radiation is just unfathomably scary stuff.

ok I just got fucking chills looking at the colored picture.

artist-confessions:

I’ve seen many confessions about this, and I’ve seen many people complaining about this. And yes, I’ve experienced this myself many times.

But when that happens to me, I often already KNOW that it’s going to happen and why.

Because most of the time when this occur, when your work that you fought so long to finish barely gets any feedback…

It’s probably because you have been overworking the picture.

One very good example is the pictures in this confession: Link!

NO ONE really cares about the amount of time you’ve put on your work, because that wont be shown for someone who haven’t witnessed the process - all they see is the finished result.

I can clearly see why the picture to the right in that post gets more attention than the one to the left:

- It has contrast, contrast is very important to consider if you wanna make sure that people will notice it even as a tiny THUMBNAIL.

How many times have you seen a detailed lineart on the front page on dA?

Not that often, right? Well that’s because you barely can see so much of the content in a tiny tiny thumbnail - compared to a finished painting with good composition and contrast in values.

- The other picture might contains “lots of stuff and details”, but the perspective and background has a flawed base. The colors are all saturated and the shadows doesn’t provide a good range of values. No matter how much time was spent on it, it still looks mediocre and boring compared to a vomiting angel.

Amount of details does NOT make the picture “better”. It’s all in the foundation of values and composition.

If you don’t want your sketches and doodles to get more attention than your finished paintings, then don’t post sketches and doodles to begin with.

Sketches and doodles will for the most part always look more alive than the finished result. Because you go by your gut feeling, the energy in your pen strokes brings life to the drawing.

Some artists keep their finished art as pretty loose and sketchy just to contain that special feeling of energy in their art.

So a BIG protip to you who suffer from this “feedback problem”: study composition and values (light/shadow) and put more focus on the foundations in the drawing rather than the amount of content and details.

Now I’m off to do some composition studies.

-foervraengd

Don’t usually reblog artist-confessions but this one is actually a lot of good sense!

This applies not only to casual feedback online—I was actually told many times when I was at Calarts that my portfolio work looked “too finished” and that I didn’t include enough really quick rough material. Being a perfectionist, I was frustrated because to me, showing rough sketches was lazy and only showed your weaknesses to potential employers.

Then a teacher explained to me: Look at the art books you like (for films like Kung-Fu Panda, Tangled, Up, what have you). What are the things that are most exciting to you? Oftentimes they are not the polished, fully detailed background paintings you’ll see (though you might admire those for things like color and composition). The things that REALLY excite people are the quick character sketches. The reason for that is not because they’re perfect drawings but because they have an enormous amount of energy and personality—and they tell a story.

So basically a repeat of what has been said above—the basic elements of a drawing are what tend to get a strong emotional response from people, NOT the time you spent etching in every little detail on your character’s fingernails. Also I consider it bad form to complain about people not liking your art in EXACTLY the way you want them to—keep in mind that no one is ever obligated to like or comment on your art and if people’s responses bother you that much, you always have the choice not to post anything. :\
